Project 52, Out On The Lake…

This  past weekend some friends and I got together for a workshop/reunion at a lake house just north of Nashville.   We had one afternoon of crazy weather in which it was full sun for an hour and then storms moved in that had us thinking a tornado was coming.   An hour later, the sun was out. An hour after that, major storms.  This went on until about 6 o’clock in the evening.  Finally, the skies opened up and the clouds disappeared for good.  After a long day stuck in side, my friend Wiff took us out on the lake for a ride on her boat.   In the time we were on the boat, we enjoyed the sun set and touches of orange sky.  My friend Ann was standing at the front of the boat when I snapped this silhouette of her in action.

I have a ton of great Lake pictures to share with you all.  First I need to catch up on 4 days away so be sure to check back for more in the next day or two!

Mother’s Day Mini Sessions…

I never do mini sessions so this is a true treat for mom!  (Mom, forward this link to Dad!)

Baby Bear…

It has been just shy of a year since I last photographed this family, one of my favorite shoots of last summer.  Anyone who has been to my office has seen a display of there shoot up on my gallery wall.  This was our third shoot and each one gets sweeter.  Recently this young family welcomed a sweet little boy into the family and I had the pleasure of photographing him not too long after he came home.  During baby and mommy time, I got to hang with big sister and have fun with her running in the backyard.  And if you are wondering about the bear ear hat, mommy found it on one of my favorite sites, ETSY.

Giving Is Awesome, Part 1…

For the past 2 years, I have been participating in the  “Giving Is Awesome,”  portrait giveaway.  It is when you, my blog readers, to nominate someone you knows who deserves the gift of custom photography.  After a flood of nominations last year, this year I decided to gift two families rather than one.    One of families to receive this gift is a mom who is always giving, but never asks for anything in return.   Here is the letter I received from her friend in Florida who nominated as one of this years winners:

“Hey Melissa,
I have the perfect candidate for your photography giveaway – someone who, in my opinion, defines the word “Give” – Liz V.

I have no idea how she does it but Liz seems to be in a permanent state of “giving” – especially with her time and dedication. She’s an amazing Mom who works hard to raise her girls while working as a writer/editor. When she’s not busy running her girls to various activities, she’s attending a Girl Scouts or PTA meeting. And by “attending” I mean “volunteering” at these meetings – Liz isn’t the type to sit back and watch while others take on roles/tasks. She jumps right in, devoting her time and energy and showing her daughters what it means to volunteer without expecting anything in return.

And if that’s not enough, Liz is also the Head Organizer of an extremely active, local meetup group called BabyMine Playgroup.
Within BabyMine, she leads a team of 6 Organizers and 140+ activie members who, aside from the daily ins and outs of running such a group, actively participates in numerous charities with an impressive success rate (March of Dimes, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Food Bank, Astor Home). Have I mentioned that she does all of these things without getting paid or compensated in any way? She just does it – because it’s what feels right to her.

It would be great to see someone who gives so much, be given something so generous back!

Good luck in finding someone – I love that you do this. Have I mentioned how much I think you rock? :)

I personally know Liz and couldn’t have agreed more. I finally got to meet with her and her daughters this past weekend and it was just a joy to photograph these two.  Not a dull moment!

32 Raymond Ave…

That is our new address.  Waddle n Swaddle has moved and so has the Surprise Photography Design Studio.   The new store is bigger, brighter and right across the street from the old one.  The studio has a couple more updates that need to be made but otherwise we are up and running and open for business.

With the new studio comes new hours.  Client meetings will be held on Monday and Thursday evenings, weekends by special appointment, and I will now have open hours on Wednesdays from 10-12 for those who wish to come in and meet me, check out our products, as well as ask any specific questions regarding sessions.

Of course, one of my favorite things about our new location, being squeezed between Elizabeth Boutique and Thai Spice.

2 Girls and One More On The Way…

I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing this fabulous momma this past weekend.   Her and her husband have two beautiful daughters and will welcome their 3rd this May.  Although we shot a lot inside, we were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day.  In fact, it was 30 degrees warmer than my shoot last Saturday.

I really enjoyed the time I got to spend with this family.  Our kids are all the same age and we are both expecting our 3rd.  I look forward to meeting the newest addition next month when I go back to photograph her newborn photos.
